Your entire argument is that we should abandon reason for fear. Because of fear of some slippery slope that we may tumble down into a mire of totalitarianism, we cannot apply reason to cull complete garbage out of college curricula.
Ultimately, this mirrors Kaepernick’s protests of the national anthem in the NFL. He was protesting systemic racism and was then shut out of playing in the league by systemic racism. College students want some say in their curricula, but backseat drivers cite a parade of white guys from tens, hundreds, and even thousands of years ago to preserve a system based on the ideals of those same white guys, which is the exact same system that college students are trying to change in the first place.
How about just let college students have some say in their own education. If they don’t want to read Neil Gaiman, that’s fine. The world is not going to end in a totalitarian hellscape. You can get a great education without reading Nazi love stories or listening to Robin Thicke.
