We need to hear each other’s stories.

You make a good point. Some of the people who grew up in 95% white towns probably never had the opportunity to read Interpreter of Maladies, to hear some of the stories Jhumpa Lahiri tells. Of course, every Indian-American kid growing up in the United States was exposed to Edgar Allen Poe and J.D. Salinger and a veritable slew of other white American authors. If you grow up hearing the stories of Jhumpa Lahiri as well, you might not get so scared when an Indian family moves in down the street, and you may realize that being American has nothing to do with being white or being born in America.

I hope they’re reading that in high school these days.
