This piece is one giant straw man. I am not a progressive, so I can’t tell you how someone did or did not fail progressives. I am an American, and I can tell you how they failed the American people.
Cory Booker didn’t fail the American people because of one vote on one bill. He failed the American people the instant NorPAC, a far-right pro-Israeli PAC, became his biggest donor. He failed the American people when he took money from Goldman Sachs.
Elizabeth Warren didn’t fail the American people because she backed Clinton. She failed when she took eight months to say one word about Standing Rock. Why did she stay silent about Standing Rock for eight months? Why was it so difficult to be on the right side with regard to Standing Rock from day one? At least it only took Cory Booker seven months to say something.
These people don’t represent you or me. If Cory Booker were in my corner, he wouldn’t be taking money from NorPAC or Goldman Sachs. If Elizabeth Warren were in my corner, she would have said something about Standing Rock before the 11th hour.
I’m sick of this bullshit. I’m sick of seeing hard fought progress and reform won by dogged and determined people being continuously undermined and outright destroyed by petulant, selfish and egotistical narcissists who do absolutely nothing but trash and destroy everything just because they didn’t get everything they wanted in record time or their pet issue(s) didn’t come first.
There is no pet issue. Everything is linked.
But all the prescription drugs in the world will not stop Blacks, Latinx, Asians, Native Americans, and Muslims from being beaten and murdered simply for their race or religion.
I cannot see how remaining silent about Standing Rock helped Native Americans, either.
I think you assign the blame to the wrong parties. The people on the left are not at fault here. The people on the left have virtually nobody to vote for. The people on the left are not being represented by anyone, save for a scant few like Kshama Sawant in Seattle. The people on the left have few voices with the courage to speak truth to power, save for the likes of Cornel West. The corporate infiltration of Washington, D.C. and the hijacking of the American government by the oligarchic elite since the Reagan era has seen to this. Tolerating this instead of fighting against it is what is killing us all. You browbeating the people on the left to accept compromise and incrementalism isn’t helping.
You brought up Angela Davis as someone doing the work of the left. Here’s what she had to say about the matter: “What this country needs is more unemployed politicians.” She’s right. All those politicians in the system taking bribes from the same corporations who perpetrate social ills have got to go. Instead of defending them, paying lip service to Angela Davis, and getting mad at people without a shred of political power, why not read some Angela Davis and figure out what it is she’s been trying to teach you? Did you know that she is a member of the CCDS, a democratic socialist group? Have you read what they have to say about Sanders?
Do you even understand anything Angela Davis is about, or did you just name drop her? She didn’t endorse anyone in the 2016 campaign. Do you know what she said about it? “I believe in independent politics. I still think that we need a new party, a party that is grounded in labor, a party that can speak to all of the issues around racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, what is happening in the world. We don’t yet have that party.” Maybe you would call that nihilistic purity, but she’s not backing Cory Booker or the Democratic Party, either. A party grounded in labor does not include people like Cory Booker, 75% of whose funds come from business, and only 12% come from labor.
I want to vote for Angela Davis.
You Bernie Bros aren’t fooling anybody by having one set of standards for Sanders and those who pledge complete allegiance to him (like Tulsi Gabbard and Keith Ellison) and a completely different set of standards for every other Democratic politician — and it’s very clear by now that Sanders himself knows this and loves every bit of it.
And don’t think it hasn’t been noticed that the people who have been most savagely attacked for failing your purity tests and not worshipping at the altar of Lord Sanders have been people of color and women.
That’s a little ironic. Keith Ellison is black and a Muslim, and Tulsi Gabbard is a woman of color. Raul Grijalva was the first member of Congress to endorse Sanders. As it happens, he’s also a person of color.
Anyway, go read some Angela Davis. To your credit, you know who she is, but if you think talking about her in a piece wherein you defend corporatism and chastise the left is legit, you clearly haven’t learned anything from her.
