Somewhere along the way, this homogenous notion of Millennials as a generation of Hannah Horvaths took form. There’s this idea that we’re all spoiled, narcissistic, and unwilling to work, with an epidemic sense of entitlement to more than what we deserve. That narrative has never worked for me.

This is not unique to the present or to Millennials. Rewind two decades and you can see the same type of judgment and dismissiveness cast down at Gen Xers for being a bunch of do-nothing slackers incapable of working an honest job.

It’s safe to say that older people have been lamenting the shortcomings of the youth for as long as there have been old people. You need look no further than a YouTube comments section to see all the oldsters jumping in to talk about how new music is terrible and the music of their generation was better, back when “music was music.” Whatever, bro.

The truth of the matter is the youth is always on the right side of history, and the older generations, sadly, are not. So, if you’re a Millennial today, trying out what’s new and forging a new path while the old-timers mock and decry you, just be sure not to fall into the trap of badgering the iGeneration later on when they are the new up and comers.
