  1. There’s no such thing as democratic capitalism. The United States is not democratic; no capitalist country is or ever will be. Special interests hold disproportionate influence, and in the case of the United States, the top vote getter has lost the presidential election twice already in the new millennium.
  2. Handwringing over Chinese data being subject to oversight by Chinese authorities is racist. It’s the exoticization of Chinese culture by way of arbitrary delineation between Western and Asian government structure. It is a White Man’s Burden argument for the 21st century, wrapped in a package of orientalist fearmongering. Not to mention, it ignores the authoritarian realities of the US’s own FISA courts. Perhaps the Chinese government doesn’t trust them. I know I don’t.
