Honest debate requires a willingness to abandon the outdated idea that any move to restrict access to guns and ammunition is an assault on freedom. The give me liberty or give me death argument is giving us too much death and needs to be calibrated for the age we live in.

The outmoded nature of the Second Amendment is at the heart of the matter.

Will new gun laws end gun violence? No. Our society is flooded with guns and they can’t be taken away.

I think they can be taken away, but it will require legislative change to enable that. A forced buyback of all assault weapons in the hands of civilians and the police would be a great start to curtailing gun violence. I don’t think it’s fair to ask everyday citizens to surrender their assault weapons if the police have them, and I can’t see the police being enthusiastic about surrendering their assault weapons if the citizenry has them. Rather than the present state of both parties being too heavily armed, I say disarm both sides.

That would be an act of choosing compassion over fear.
