The Democratic Party has been revealing itself to be a bunch of cowardly double-talkers for a long time. When the supposedly most progressive senator in the entire Democratic Party, Elizabeth Warren, has nothing to say about DAPL, not even one tweet, for months, it suggests the party is hopeless. When only 19 out of 188 Democrats in the US House of Representatives signed onto a letter urging Obama to halt DAPL in October, a figure of approximately 10%, it shows you 90% lack the courage to stand up for what is right.
Why should Democratic representatives even need to send such a letter to a Democratic president in the first place? Why wasn’t this handled months ago, the minute the injustice of it all was overtly and undeniably apparent to everyone who isn’t a complete deplorable?
This issue was and is so incredibly obvious in terms of right and wrong that it boggles the mind how anyone claiming to represent democracy and the people — all people — could lack the courage and sense to say even one word against DAPL. These politicians are either out of touch or corrupt or both. How is it only one person from Congress was even there to see what was happening in person, to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the veterans and protestors who were there? Too busy golfing with donors?
Neoliberalism obliterated the Democratic Party. People need to wake up to this and demand something new. Neoliberalism and its concomitant greed will never capture the votes of the left again. We see the evils behind the pleasant words, and we’re not going to vote for you. Period.
