Something a lot of critics don’t understand: consumption has economic value. If there weren’t consumption, there wouldn’t be production. It is not an accident that things like the Kardashev Scale measure consumption, not production. It’s one thing to have the Three Gorges Dam produce 22.5 MW of power, but if that power doesn’t get used for something, what’s the point?
UBI is one way of recognizing this, by paying people to be consumers, in that, to exist is to consume. If they want to be producers on top of that, they can, and, by doing so, can earn more than the UBI.
