It’s important for people with a voice to stand up and say, “Fuck the NRA.” I applaud you for that. The NRA is just a special interest group, and it’s past time that we allow special interests to control our government. Consider what special interest means in the case of the recent Dallas shootings, when we break down who wins and who loses. The events, broadly, were as follows:

  1. A man was trained with US tax dollars to kill with firearms so that he could go overseas and perpetrate violence on foreign soil;
  2. This man returned home, where he got angry and killed other people who had been trained with US tax dollars to kill with firearms, and was ultimately killed himself;
  3. Gun manufacturers profited at every step.

The Dallas shooter did not win. The police did not win. The civilians who were shot and terrorized while participating in a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest did not win. The American people did not win. The only winners were the gun manufacturers, who turned a profit on every gun and bullet used in this incident and every gun-related event in the lives of the Dallas shooter and his victims that led to this incident. How do you think these same gun manufacturers feel about the NRA? I think money talks. From the Wikipedia entry for the NRA:

Corporate donors include a variety of companies such as outdoors supply, sporting goods companies, and firearm manufacturers. From 2005 through 2011, the NRA received at least $14.8 million from more than 50 firearms-related firms. An April 2011 Violence Policy Center presentation said that the NRA had received between $14.7 million and $38.9 million from the firearms industry since 2005. In 2008, Beretta exceeded $2 million in donations to the NRA, and in 2012, Smith & Wesson gave more than $1 million. Sturm, Ruger & Company raised $1.25 million through a program in which it donated $1 to the NRA-ILA for each gun it sold from May 2011 to May 2012.

These companies aren’t giving away millions to the NRA because of principles or because they think it’s going to help you or me. They are giving the NRA money because the NRA is doing their PR dirty work, spending millions on propaganda and government bribes to support antiquated laws, because those laws let the gun manufacturers continue to turn a profit. Let’s not pretend there is anything else going on here. These companies and the NRA that champions them are trading on the deaths of American citizens.
