Actually, thanks for the nitpick. I added a paragraph to clarify. When the government mandates “non kosher” or “non halal” labels I’ll agree with you.
It’s hardly a nitpick. You are claiming that it’s unscientific to require that information about GMO be added to food labels. It’s not unscientific. You’re simply incorrect, and that’s just a statement of fact, not a nitpick.
You are actually arguing for ignorance, trying to make the case that people should not be given information that they want to appear on food labels. I personally have nothing against GMO in principle, but I also have nothing against empowering people by giving them the information they want. Why should a corporation be allowed to sell you food but not disclose what’s in the food?
You being against that is not you taking a stand for science. It’s you being reactionary because you have observed that a lot of unscientific people push bogus narratives about GMO food. Your observation is correct; that does happen. And it happens at an alarming rate. But, that is neither here nor there when it comes to whether it is better for people to have access to more information. Just label the foods and let people decide for themselves what to buy.
The greatest irony here is that your frustration about anti-scientific thinking and policy stems from how we find ourselves amidst a miseducated, ignorant public. Americans are scammed, misled, and hoodwinked right and left because of widespread ignorance about the scientific method. Yet here you are arguing for ignorance. If you want to be a science advocate, you must first and foremost be opposed to ignorance. That’s what gets us into unscientific messes in the first place. An informed, educated populace, empowered with critical thinking skills and accurate data is much harder to fool than a populace awash in ignorance.
You really need to think about what you’re really trying to accomplish. You’re shooting science advocacy in the foot when you get derailed into reactionary stances like this, because you have abandoned reason and logic out of spite for the motives of unscientific actors who trade on the fears of an ignorant public. When you allow that to happen, you become just as much a part of the problem as they are.
