I'll quote Einstein. From his piece linked in the Wikipedia article. Starting with evil, the antithesis of good, which to do the most good, it would be necessary to minimize.
"The economic anarchy of capitalist society as it exists today is, in my opinion, the real source of the evil."
How did Einstein propose to eliminate that?
"I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals. In such an economy, the means of production are owned by society itself and are utilized in a planned fashion. A planned economy, which adjusts production to the needs of the community, would distribute the work to be done among all those able to work and would guarantee a livelihood to every man, woman, and child. The education of the individual, in addition to promoting his own innate abilities, would attempt to develop in him a sense of responsibility for his fellow men in place of the glorification of power and success in our present society."
This stands in contradiction to a research project that is based on funneling money away from taxes and into nonprofit ventures. It also relies on bureaucracy, which you say in your piece that you eschew.
A socialist economy, wherein the means of production are collectively owned and democratically managed, also precludes the possibility of philanthropy, because no individual, by way of leveraging such ownership, would be able to amass economic surplus at the expense of shortchanging wage labor to the point that people require philanthropy to begin with.
Ultimately, it is impossible for kings or magnates with vast treasuries to do the most good, because their very existence as rulers with enormous fortunes hinges on the disenfranchisement of others.
If you disagree with Einstein, that's obviously your right, but it then becomes hollow to begin your piece with a quote from him.
If you agree up to a point, but do not agree with economic planning or bureaucracy, and you want to achieve the maximum good, then something that approximates this vision would run along the lines of a UBI. Minimal planning from either a bureaucracy or a group of managers, and the apportioning of resources in a more equitable way than what we see in our present society.
Happy to participate in such an experiment.
