If you ask me, scientists calling people ignorant and uncool really isn’t helpful. Scientists should ask themselves why people don’t trust them and then take measures to correct that problem. If there were more trust in scientific institutions, it wouldn’t be so easy to turn people into conspiracy theorists, and we wouldn’t have the problems of widespread climate denial or vaccine hesitancy that we do today. Instead of berating people who have gotten hoodwinked by fringe religions, rightwing media, pseudo-scientific charlatans, or other sources of disinformation, scientists should call out their own who are contributing to the problem by way of their greed and corruption. That will produce a much more significant benefit to society.
