French towns in the 15th century restricted access to travelers who had documentation that they were not infectious. Major ports throughout Europe instituted two-week quarantine protocol for ships that had arrived from areas where plague was present. Signage was posted in areas with known outbreaks to warn passersby. It did not “go pandemic” because, even in pre-Enlightenment times, people understood the value of implementing countermeasures to disease spread. Vaccines, contact tracing, masks, and social distancing are modern updates to age-old anti-pandemic procedure.
