First of all, it’s politically defeating. One of the questions people have been asking is, why should we listen to them? Aren’t they the ones with the closed minds — shouldn’t they be listening to us? The short answer to this is: because we need their votes. When you’ve just lost an election, it’s insane to go around loudly writing off groups of voters.
Completely false. Clinton did not need the votes of anyone on the right. She didn’t need any votes from any flagrant racists or any retrograde misogynists. Clinton was never going to get those votes. It is not insane to write off die-hard Republicans and bigots if you’re running as a Democrat. You’re absolutely not getting their votes, period. The Democrats need to stop even trying to cater to them. They are a relatively small and powerless group, and, demographically, they are dying off.
Clinton needed the votes of the people on the left, and she failed to get them. Obama had 5 million more votes in 2012 and 9 million more votes in 2008. The reason is that there are plenty in the working class of all races on the political left who did not show up to vote for Clinton, because they saw Clinton as a corporate crony, and the Obama presidency had left a bad taste in their mouths for the exact same reason. And they’re right. She was all about that super PAC money, and she was Wall Street’s chosen champion. She offered absolutely nothing to the progressive left, to the youth, to left-wing Independents, or to working class America. She offered the promise of an oligarchic status quo. That is not how you motivate the left to come out and vote, and that is why Clinton lost.
